Chapter 9: Zhan’s Journey: Unlocking the Secrets of the Undead Monarch

Unveiling Lin Zhan’s Destiny: The Power of the Undead Monarch

The day after his conversation with the mysterious man, Lin Zhan couldn’t shake the sense of foreboding that clung to him. The memories, the vision of the shadowed figure, and the cryptic warnings about the Undead Monarch’s power—it all felt like a puzzle that he was struggling to piece together. But each new piece only revealed more questions. What had happened to his past? Why had it been erased? And, most importantly, why was he chosen to wield such a dangerous power?

He knew he couldn’t answer these questions alone. He needed to uncover the truth. But how? The man had said that Lin Zhan’s past was hidden—erased. His memories, the answers he sought, seemed locked away behind a veil that he couldn’t penetrate.

With these thoughts weighing heavily on his mind, Lin Zhan returned to the clearing where he had first connected with the Qi. He had to focus. He had to continue his training and learn to control the power inside him before it consumed him. But even as he sat cross-legged, attempting to meditate, the questions persisted, gnawing at him like an itch he couldn’t scratch.

He closed his eyes and began to breathe deeply, grounding himself in the present moment. His muscles ached from the intense physical training, but he didn’t allow the pain to distract him. Slowly, he tuned out everything around him—the rustle of the leaves in the wind, the distant chirp of birds—and turned inward, focusing on the Qi.

The energy swirled around him, a steady pulse of life. He could feel it now, more attuned than ever. The Qi wasn’t just a force—it was a living thing, constantly in motion, never still. It was as if the very world itself was breathing along with him.

But as he reached for the energy, something shifted. For a brief moment, the air around him thickened, and Lin Zhan felt an odd presence. It was subtle at first, like a faint whisper at the edge of his senses. But then it grew stronger, like a shadow creeping into his awareness.

He froze.

This was different. This wasn’t just the Qi. It was something else—something dark, something that stirred inside him. The presence was familiar. Too familiar.

Suddenly, his vision blurred. He felt his body begin to sway as if the ground beneath him was tilting. Panic surged in his chest, but he fought to steady himself. He couldn’t let it take control. Not now.

“Lin Zhan,” a voice called out. It was soft, but it carried a weight of authority. “Focus.”

It was the mysterious man, standing just outside the clearing. His face was unreadable, but his eyes were sharp, watching Lin Zhan with a mixture of concern and calculation.

Lin Zhan steadied his breathing. He could feel the darkness pressing against his mind, but the man’s voice anchored him. Slowly, the presence receded, but the lingering feeling of something ominous remained.

“I… I felt it again,” Lin Zhan said, his voice shaky. “The darkness. It’s inside me.”

The man stepped forward, his expression solemn. “It’s not just inside you, Lin Zhan. It’s a part of you.”

Lin Zhan frowned. “What does that mean?”

The man’s eyes flickered to the ground, then back to Lin Zhan. “The Undead Monarch’s power is not something you can control by simply drawing on the Qi. It is not just an external force you tap into—it is a part of your very essence. You were bound to it long before you even knew of its existence.”

Lin Zhan’s stomach twisted. “You’re saying… I was chosen for this power?”

The man nodded. “Yes. But not in the way you think. You are not the first to wield it. The Undead Monarch’s power has been passed down through generations, but each time, it corrupts those who wield it. It is an ancient curse.”

Lin Zhan’s mind raced. “So, I’m cursed?”

“No,” the man corrected, his tone firm. “But you must understand: the power you possess is dangerous. It will try to consume you, to make you its vessel. But if you can learn to control it, you may be able to wield it without succumbing to its pull.”

Lin Zhan struggled to comprehend what the man was saying. “How do I control it? How do I stop it from taking me over?”

The man’s gaze turned distant, as if considering the question carefully. “The answer lies in your past. The truth of who you were before you were bound to the Undead Monarch is the key to understanding how to control the power. But that truth is locked away.”

Lin Zhan’s heart sank. “I don’t even remember my past. I don’t know who I was.”

The man’s eyes softened with what might have been sympathy. “That is the first challenge you must overcome. You need to uncover your memories, Lin Zhan. Only then can you understand the connection between you and the Undead Monarch. And only then can you find the strength to control it.”

Lin Zhan clenched his fists, a surge of determination flooding his veins. “Where do I start?”

The man paused, and for a moment, Lin Zhan thought he might not answer. Then, in a quiet voice, the man spoke.

“There is a place. A hidden temple deep within the mountain ranges to the north. It is said that the temple holds the answers you seek. But it is dangerous. Many have gone in search of it and never returned. The path is fraught with peril.”

Lin Zhan met the man’s gaze, his mind already made up. “I’ll go. If the answers are there, I’ll find them.”

The man nodded, a hint of approval in his eyes. “Be careful, Lin Zhan. The journey ahead will test you in ways you cannot yet imagine. But you are stronger than you know.”

With that, the man turned and began to walk away. But before he disappeared into the shadows, he called over his shoulder.

“Do not forget this, Lin Zhan: the power of the Undead Monarch is not something you can ever truly tame. It will always be a part of you. The question is not whether you can control it—but whether you can survive it.”

Lin Zhan stood still, watching as the man disappeared from view. His words echoed in his mind, mixing with the unease that still lingered in his chest. The power of the Undead Monarch was within him, a force that could either be his greatest weapon or his doom.

He had no choice but to face it head-on.

To be continued...
